Amber 31422

SYNOPSIS

In this episode, Olivia, still trapped in the other side and brainwashed, investigates the Rose brothers who are able to do the seemingly impossible: escape from an amber-like substance used to contain fringe events. Meanwhile, Walternate experiments with Olivia again and she re-enters the tank while visions of Peter continue to haunt her about returning to the "other side."

FRINGE DIVISION CASE FILE #305-11410

FRINGE EVENT: Amber quarantine resuscitation

AGENTS ASSIGNED: Lee, Francis, Dunham

SUPERVISING AGENT: Colone Broyles

FILE ARCHIVED BY: Janet Browne, Nikolai Gavazov

WITNESSES/CONTACTS: Matthew Rose, Danielle Rose (wife)

LOCATION: Franklin Station, Brooklyn; Nanuet; Riverdale Mutual, Bronx

VICTIM(S): Mark Wilner, Joshua Rose

CASE REPORT SUMMARY:

Fringe agents were called to the Franklin Station quarantine area of Brooklyn for a breach alert. It had been sealed for four years, but agents arrived to find disrupted amber that contained a new person, convicted thief Mark Wilner, and broken amber that had contained bank robber Joshua Rose. According to Colonel Broyles, four years prior, Rose had created a device that allowed him to access sealed vaults without tripping alarms. The device also caused molecular degradation, so amber quarantines had to be enacted at each robbery site. Rose was finally caught in an amber protocol at Franklin Station.
At suspect Rose's former apartment, agents found a hidden cache of high-grade electronics, lasers, and Ferrocene tanks used to make a negative-matter ring. Agent Dunham managed to evacuate her team before a bomb exploded.
Agent Dunham surmised that twin brother Matthew Rose had actually been caught in the Franklin Station amber protocol trying to stop Joshua Rose. But Joshua Rose escaped and spent the subsequent years pretending to be Matthew Rose. Once reunited, the brothers denied the accusation. Joshua Rose attempted one more burglary, as anticipated by Agent Dunham, but got stuck in amber. Danielle Rose later admitted that she had pushed Joshua Rose to turn himself in to our agents.

EPISODE CONNECTIONS

Callbacks (5 earlier episodes)
  • Walternate used a sensory deprivation tank to clear Olivia's mind in "Amber 31422" just like Walter did for Olivia in "Pilot".
  • Connection: Green-green-green-red S3E05 Timestamp: 03:20
The Franklin St. Station subway sign in "Amber 31422" shows the numbers 6-9-5-5 in the 'green-green-green-red' circle pattern from "The Equation".
  • Matthew and Joshua Rose were robbing banks in "Amber 31422" by weakening the molecular structure of the bank walls, the same technique used by Loeb in "Safe".
  • Olivia heard a bomb that others didn't hear in "Amber 31422", perhaps the same enhanced hearing side-effect from crossing over that she exhibited in "Night of Desirable Objects" when she could hear barely discernable sounds at home and in the Hughes home.
  • Connection: Amber protest signs S3E01 Timestamp: 18:56
    Colonel Broyles (in "Amber 31422"):
"Sir... It's a tragic, but a small price to pay for the greater good. People understand that."
    Walternate:
"Perhaps. But if they were to find out that the amber victims could be removed and resuscitated, I'm afraid the outcry would be akin to revolt."
    Colonel Broyles:
    "Quarantine victims are alive?"
    Walternate:
    "Theoretically."

People think that those who are ambered are dead; a group protested ambering the opera house in "Olivia". The public doesn't know that amber victims are actually alive.
