The death of Randy Dancik, who spontaneously turned to ash inside his home, tipped off the return of a serial killer case handled by Agent Broyles. Four years ago in DC, five similar deaths occurred, and each victim worked at, or had recently visited, Tyson General in DC. After the third death, Agent Broyles was contacted by a distraught Eastern European man who offered to turn himself in if they could decipher the formula of a molecular model. CDC and NIH chemists couldn't break it. Two more people died, and the killings ended with the case unsolved.
 The Fringe team determined the killer to be Timur Vasiliev, the brother of missing cosmonaut Aleks Vasiliev. Wanted by the CIA and the Russian government, Timur Vasiliev, using the alias Tomas Koslov, took his comatose brother from a secret quarantine facility where he was being studied, and remained on the run with him from hospital to hospital. Dr. Bishop found Danick to have no radiation in his body - an impossible natural state. The ash victims were all undergoing radiation treatment at the time of their deaths, which attracted an organism of unknown origin that Aleks Vasiliev brought back with him from space. It passed through victims to absorb radiation and disintegrated them in the process. The Russians tried to remove the organism from the cosmonaut and found the two had bonded at a molecular level. Timur Vasiliev attempted to do so in vain, until the organism took him, too.
